Canadian astronaut Joshua Kutryk is gearing up for a unique space adventure, following in the footsteps of his compatriot Jeremy Hansen, who recently circled the moon. Kutryk, a native of Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, is set to embark on a six-month mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS), a significant milestone in his career as an engineer, fighter pilot, and test pilot with over 4,000 flight hours across various aircraft.
Expressing his excitement during a press briefing, Kutryk shared his astonishment at the opportunity to represent Canada on this mission, emphasizing the personal significance of the experience. Originally slated for a launch on Boeing’s CST-100 Starliner, Kutryk will now travel onboard SpaceX’s Crew Dragon due to delays in Boeing’s mission schedule. Despite a brief setback pushing his launch date to October 1, Kutryk remains confident in the readiness of the spacecraft.
As he prepares for his ISS journey, Kutryk is packing meaningful items, including Canadian memorabilia and flags, symbolizing his deep-rooted connection to his homeland. Notably, he will carry an old pocket watch that holds sentimental value, having traveled from Ukraine to Canada with his family. Reflecting on the watch’s journey to space, Kutryk sees it as a poignant reminder of the transformative power of exploration.
Anticipating his time in space, Kutryk revealed his simple yet profound excitement to gaze out of the station’s windows at Earth, a childhood dream that continues to captivate him. Joining him on the Crew 13 mission are NASA astronauts Jessica Watkins and Luke Delaney, alongside Russian cosmonaut Sergey Teteriatnikov, marking their first space voyage.
During their mission, the crew will conduct various experiments, including Canadian initiatives, showcasing the collaborative nature of space exploration. Kutryk emphasized the unifying aspect of the mission, highlighting the global cooperation among nations despite challenges on Earth, underscoring the potential for a brighter future through shared endeavors beyond our planet.
