“Canadian astronaut to launch with innovative tech to tackle space health risks”

Date:

Canadian astronaut Joshua Kutyrk is set to launch from Cape Canaveral, Fla., on Oct. 1, carrying innovative Canadian technology. Living and working in space poses unique challenges due to the human body’s adaptation to low gravity, leading to potential health risks like blood clots.

NASA has been investigating the impact of extended space missions on the human body, particularly concerning the formation of blood clots. To address this concern, they have enlisted the help of Vancouver-based Response Biomedical. The technology, known as Acute Care Testing in Space (ACTIS), is derived from the company’s RAMP technology and can detect blood clots, heart attacks, and diseases like COVID-19 within minutes.

The portability and efficiency of the ACTIS device make it a valuable tool for space missions and remote communities on Earth. This technology’s potential success on the International Space Station could pave the way for its use in future space exploration missions to the moon or Mars. Both NASA and the Canadian Space Agency view the selection of ACTIS for the ISS as a significant achievement for Canada’s technological innovation.

The adaptation of Canadian-developed health technology for space exploration demonstrates the global impact of Canadian innovation, with potential applications beyond Earth’s orbit.
