Canton, a familiar place from my past, has secured a spot on Time Out’s list of the UK’s trendiest neighborhoods, landing in third place just after Camberwell and Digbeth. The area, previously known as a stopover for football fans en route to Cardiff City Stadium, has transformed into a vibrant community with various shops and cafes. Notably, Chapter Arts Centre offers a diverse range of entertainment, while Hard Lines Coffee and Ffloc provide delectable dining options. Corp Market, a former pub turned eclectic market, also hosts unique establishments like Head Above The Waves, a skatewear boutique and mental health support center.
Once considered a less desirable suburb, Canton has seen a surge in property values as more middle-class residents move in. The neighborhood now offers a mix of trendy establishments, replacing old favorites like Woolworths and Franklin’s Bakery. Despite the changes, some traditional businesses like the local cobbler still thrive, maintaining a connection to Canton’s past.
New eateries and cafes continue to pop up, adding to Canton’s evolving culinary scene. From award-winning restaurants like Purple Poppadom to innovative spots like Burger Boyz and Workhorse, there is no shortage of dining options. The community hub, Chapter Arts Centre, remains a focal point for cultural activities, showcasing indie films and hosting creative workshops.
With its mix of new and old establishments, Canton retains its unique charm and local character, making it a must-visit destination for food enthusiasts and culture lovers alike. Despite the modernization and influx of trendy venues, Canton’s essence remains rooted in its rich history and sense of community.
