Conor McGregor Opts Out of UFC’s White House Event

Date:

Conor McGregor has officially announced that he will not be participating in the UFC’s upcoming event at the White House.

Initially, McGregor was rumored to headline a fight against Michael Chandler on President Donald Trump’s front lawn on June 14. However, it is now anticipated that McGregor will make his return to the octagon in July instead. UFC CEO Dana White is set to reveal the details of the White House card on Saturday evening, but McGregor’s name is likely to be absent from the lineup, with the Irish fighter expected to compete on July 11.

Speaking to Smash Cast, McGregor expressed his initial excitement about the White House event, stating that he was prepared for the matchup against Chandler. However, plans seemed to have shifted, and McGregor acknowledged that he may be slated for the International Fight Week instead.

McGregor also confirmed that his return to the cage will be at welterweight, emphasizing his readiness to step back into the ring. He mentioned his eagerness to face any opponent offered to him and expressed hope for a favorable contract following discussions with his manager in Las Vegas.

As a result of McGregor’s decision, the White House card could potentially feature Jon Jones making his return to the cage, possibly against former world champion Alex Pereira, who recently vacated his middleweight and light-heavyweight titles.
