“Controversy Erupts Over Alleged Torture of Toddler by Israeli Forces”

Date:

A young child was handed back to his mother with apparent burn marks from cigarettes on his legs following an encounter with Israeli forces. The family of the toddler alleges he was subjected to mistreatment during the incident.

The child, Jawad Abu Nassar, just 21 months old, was taken into custody with his father, Osama Abu Nassar, 25, in central Gaza a week ago. However, only Jawad was returned to his family after around 10 hours. Israeli military officials have denied the allegations, stating that Jawad’s father, who is still missing, was associated with Hamas and had used his son as a shield.

According to the family, Osama had taken his son out early in the morning on March 19 to buy sweets for the upcoming Eid al-Fitr holiday. Osama was reportedly struggling with significant trauma following the loss of his home, an unborn child, and his means of living during past conflicts.

When Osama veered off course while carrying his son on his shoulders, neighbors alerted his father, Muhammed. The path taken by Osama led close to an area where Israeli forces are stationed, creating a potentially dangerous situation.

After learning about his son’s detention, Muhammed left his contact details at a local hospital and was later informed by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) that Jawad was in their care. Upon reuniting with his grandson, Muhammed noticed blood on the child’s clothing, which was explained as coming from his father’s shoulder injury.

The family recounted that Jawad exhibited distress when his mother embraced him, prompting further examination of his body. Medical professionals allegedly identified injuries on the child’s body consistent with signs of torture and burns from cigarettes, not from shrapnel or other weapons.

In response to the allegations of abuse, an Israeli military representative refuted the claims, asserting that the toddler was used as a human shield by a Hamas member. The military stated that the child received proper care and supervision while in their custody until being transferred to the Red Cross.

The family’s assertions of mistreatment have stirred controversy, with conflicting narratives emerging from the incident involving the young child.
