“Escape to Fuerteventura: Sunny Spring Getaway from UK”

Date:

An island perfect for a spring escape with abundant sunshine and pleasant weather is just a little over four hours away from the UK. This island, known for its natural beauty and long, golden sandy shorelines, attracts fewer tourists compared to its neighboring islands. Apart from the main resorts, it offers serene locations with plenty of activities to enjoy.

March is an ideal time to visit this island as it is less crowded, and you can find flights for as low as £25 one way from London-Luton airport. The island in question is Fuerteventura, the second-largest of the Canary Islands after Tenerife, situated approximately 60 miles off the North African coast and renowned for its extensive sandy beaches.

Fuerteventura, the oldest island in the Canaries dating back nearly 20 million years, was formed through intense underwater volcanic activity, resulting in unique features such as natural swimming pools. Despite being a popular tourist destination, it welcomed 2.4 million visitors in 2024, significantly fewer than Tenerife’s 5.6 million tourists, providing ample space for exploration.

With March temperatures reaching highs of 22C, Fuerteventura offers a warm and sunny escape compared to the UK’s cooler climate. The island enjoys seven to eight hours of daily sunshine and approximately 3,000 hours of sunshine annually, making it an ideal destination for those seeking Vitamin D.

Fuerteventura’s pleasant climate makes it a hub for water sports enthusiasts, offering activities such as surfing, kayaking, and waterskiing along its picturesque coastline. Visitors looking for pristine beaches can head to Parque Natural de Corralejo, known for its long stretches of powdery sand and stunning volcanic landscapes.

For a more relaxed beach experience, El Cotillo, a former fishing village, is highly recommended with its calm Mediterranean ambiance and family-friendly sandy beach. Costa Calma in the south is gaining popularity among British vacationers for its expansive sandy shores, including a beach featured in “Solo: A Star Wars Story”.

Additionally, the island features attractions like the Piscina Natural de Caleta de Fuste, a natural rock pool fed by the ocean, offering a unique swimming experience with tranquil turquoise waters surrounded by rocky terrain.

For a livelier atmosphere, visitors can explore Corralejo in the north, Fuerteventura’s largest resort, boasting charming tapas eateries, beach bars, and boutiques in its old town area. Happy hour in the harbor or one of the town squares offers affordable drinks, with pints priced as low as £1.50 and various cocktail specials available.
