German authorities are probing a drone equipped with explosives and a detonator discovered at Leipzig airport, while Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has indicated Moscow’s intention to escalate retaliation against nations aiding Ukraine.
In an interview with VGTRK, Russia’s state media, Lavrov stated, “We will employ more severe tactics to dismantle everything that supports the West in arming Kyiv’s military machine. We are already taking action.”
The drone, loaded with an unidentified explosive device, was found by an airport employee in the cargo operations zone’s security area near the south runway of Leipzig airport, classified as critical infrastructure. Leipzig serves as a key NATO airport facilitating the transport of weaponry, ammunition, arms, and other military supplies to Ukraine through flights operated by Ukrainian cargo firms.
The discovery of the drone beside a Ukrainian cargo plane has raised concerns in Germany, with the country’s interior minister referring to it as “a heightened level of risk.” Alexander Dobrindt remarked that the incident appears to be part of a sophisticated hybrid threat scenario rather than the work of amateurs.
German authorities are currently investigating the incident and have not disclosed the drone’s origin. Recent intelligence reports from U.S. officials to the Wall Street Journal suggest that the drone likely belongs to the Russian government.
Berlin is taking a cautious approach, enhancing anti-drone capabilities while refraining from premature attributions. Dobrindt emphasized the ongoing fact-finding process and refrained from making premature statements as a federal minister.
According to officials, Russia is employing drones, espionage, sabotage, and influence operations throughout Europe, including actions leading up to upcoming regional elections in Germany. Dobrindt highlighted the evolving threat landscape faced by Germany.
Describing Germany as a daily target of hybrid warfare, Dobrindt outlined various hostile activities, such as espionage, sabotage, cyber attacks, and covert operations by foreign entities seeking to destabilize the nation and implement political and social changes.
Recent incidents, including a foiled plot to assassinate a German defense contractor’s CEO and the arrest of a suspected Russian spy scouting sabotage targets, underscore the persistent threat. The Institute for Strategic Dialogue highlighted Russia’s online interference campaign, Operation Overload, targeting Germany, France, and Ukraine to undermine Ukraine’s war efforts and destabilize democracies.
Dobrindt warned of attempts to influence German politics and society through disinformation campaigns, particularly during regional elections. Senior officials emphasized Russia’s aggressive escalation in interfering with Germany, posing serious challenges to national security.
The increasing use of physical tactics in hybrid warfare raises concerns about the boundary between defense measures and direct conflict. Efforts to address such threats and Russia’s evolving aggressive stance in Europe necessitate clear responses from affected nations.
Lavrov’s recent statements indicate a shift in Russia’s approach towards acknowledging interference in Western countries, signaling a more aggressive stance against Europe, the West, and NATO.
