The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has provided guidance for British travelers heading to destinations in the Eastern Mediterranean region ahead of the upcoming summer holidays.
In preparation for the summer season, the FCDO has updated its travel advisories for Turkey, Cyprus, and Greece.
Following recent joint strikes by the US and Israel on Iran, countries surrounding Greece, Turkey, and Cyprus have experienced escalated conflict, with Iran retaliating by targeting various sites in the region.
Turkey-Syria Border
The FCDO has cautioned against travel within 10km of the Turkey-Syria border due to ongoing conflict and heightened terrorism risks in the area.
Travelers are also advised that roads leading to the border in Hatay Province may be subject to closures without prior notice.
Hakkari Province, Southeast Turkey
Visitors to Hakkari Province must obtain permission from the local Governor’s Office to access areas near the borders with Iraq and Iran. Those traveling with agents or tour groups should verify if individual permits are required.
Mount Ararat, Eastern Turkey
Mount Ararat is designated as a special military zone, necessitating permission from the Doğubayazıt government office and payment of a fee. Travelers should confirm with their agents or tour groups regarding individual permit requirements.
The FCDO highlights the potential for terrorist attacks in Cyprus, particularly in certain areas, urging vigilance among travelers.
RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus was reportedly targeted by drones early in the Middle East conflict, prompting the FCDO to issue specific guidance to British nationals in the region.
The FCDO emphasizes that the escalating regional tensions pose significant security risks and have resulted in travel disruptions.
Regarding Greece, the FCDO has updated its information, removing details about mass protests and disruption of public services in the country.
