In a chilling real-life scenario reminiscent of a movie plot, a former adult film star committed a gruesome crime by murdering her ex-father-in-law and beheading him, following her involvement with her stepson. Devyn Michaels, aged 47, was taken into custody after the discovery of the beheaded body of Jonathan Willette, 46, at his residence in Las Vegas, USA, in August 2023. Law enforcement officers present at the scene described the body as emitting smoke due to a noxious gas formed by a mixture of bleach and ammonia.
Michaels and Willette had a tumultuous relationship and shared two young daughters. Their complex familial entanglement included Michaels being concurrently married to Willette’s adult son, making her both Willette’s partner and daughter-in-law.
The former adult film actress confessed to second-degree murder last fall as part of a plea deal resulting in a 15-year prison term with the chance of parole. However, during her sentencing hearing in July, Michaels made a sudden assertion of innocence, prompting prosecutors to pursue a first-degree murder trial. Ultimately, she was handed a sentence of 20 years to life, with an additional consecutive term of eight to 20 years for the use of a deadly weapon in the crime.
The court learned that Michaels had murdered Willette to raise her children with his son. Although Michaels and Jonathan Willette were never legally married, she had wed Deviere in November 2021, allegedly to address her medical concerns and establish a family unit with her daughters.
Presenting a family picture of Michaels, Deviere, and the children, chief prosecutor John Giordani informed the jury of Michaels’ motives, stating that she desired and saw that specific future, which necessitated Willette’s removal.
Deviere also underwent a polygraph examination, during which she reportedly displayed strong physiological reactions when questioned about Willette’s death involvement.
Michaels, when questioned about her actions, admitted to striking Willette on the back of the head with a wooden spoon on the fatal night, claiming she did not intend to kill him but wanted to incapacitate him to manage her children.
Investigators suspect that Willette’s severed head was discarded in the trash and ultimately transported to a landfill. Prior to her scheduled sentencing in July, Michaels emotionally contested the accusations against her in court, asserting her innocence and determination to prove it.
Tragically, her claims proved unfounded as the murder weapon and Willette’s head remain undiscovered.
