Former Conservative MP Crispin Blunt, who previously served as a justice minister under David Cameron, has admitted guilt to four drug-related charges, including the possession of crystal meth. The 65-year-old was arrested in 2023 after law enforcement officers discovered illegal substances during a search of his residence. Blunt, who represented Reigate in Parliament from 1997 to 2024, resigned following the withdrawal of the Tory whip after the incident.
During a brief court appearance at Westminster Magistrates Court, Blunt confessed to holding GBL, a sedative, along with cannabis, methamphetamine, and methylamphetamine (commonly referred to as crystal meth). The discovery of the drugs occurred within the context of an investigation into allegations of rape against Blunt. However, after an 18-month inquiry, Surrey Police concluded that there was insufficient evidence to pursue the rape accusations further.
Malcolm McHaffie, head of the Crown Prosecution Service’s Special Crime Division, announced the charges against Blunt for possession of Class A and Class B controlled substances. The charges stem from a police visit to Blunt’s residence in Horley on October 25, 2023, which was initially unrelated to the drug offenses. Cooperation between the Crown Prosecution Service and Surrey Police facilitated the progression of the case.
Blunt’s political career was marred by the loss of the Conservative whip upon his initial arrest in October 2023, leading to his decision to step down from Parliament during the 2024 general election. Prior to his parliamentary service, Blunt served in the British Army for over a decade and is a graduate of the Sandhurst Military Academy.
