“Fugitive Slovak Caught at Winter Olympics”

Date:

After 16 years on the run, an individual who had been eluding Italian authorities was apprehended upon his return to his homeland to show support at the Winter Olympics. The man, hailing from Slovakia, made his way back to the site where he allegedly committed crimes to root for the national ice hockey team.

Despite his intentions, the 44-year-old, whose identity remains undisclosed, was intercepted by police before reaching the venue. The arrest warrant against him dates back to 2010 and is related to multiple theft incidents he reportedly carried out. According to the Carabinieri police, he is facing a sentence of 11 months and seven days.

Authorities located him after he checked into a guesthouse on the outskirts of Milan. Despite being a wanted individual, he chose to come back to the country voluntarily.

The Winter Games’ ice hockey competitions are taking place at the Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena and the Rho Ice Hockey Arena, situated on opposite ends of the city. The man had plans to attend the former on Wednesday evening.

However, his journey was cut short as he was taken into custody before reaching the arena. Subsequently, he was transferred to the central San Vittore Prison, while Slovakia’s men’s team secured a surprising victory in their first match, defeating the favored Finnish team 4-1. Their upcoming matches include facing Italy on Friday and concluding the preliminary round against Sweden on Saturday.

Slovakia, who claimed bronze in Beijing four years ago during the NHL player ban, is back at the Winter Olympics for the first time since Sochi 2014.

The Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics have been eventful so far. American icon Lindsey Vonn suffered a dramatic crash and leg injury while attempting a race without an ACL.

Jutta Leerdam, fiancée of Jake Paul, upgraded her silver medal from Beijing to gold with a thrilling win in the 1000m speed skating event. The former YouTuber, now a boxer, was visibly emotional in the stands as he cheered on his Dutch partner.

Team GB is still awaiting their first medal after some close calls. Hopes are high for skeleton world champion Matt Weston, who is in contention for gold in the upcoming final on Friday evening.
