A recent initiative is leveraging Prime Minister Mark Carney’s mention of the term “hydronym” to promote awareness and conservation efforts for Lake Ontario. Branded By Collins, a London, Ont., clothing company, has introduced T-shirts featuring the phrase, “My hydronyms are Lake & Ontario,” with a portion of the proceeds supporting Swim Drink Fish Canada. The charity aims to safeguard the lake and foster community engagement.
Following U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposal to rename Lake Ontario to Lake America amid trade disputes, Carney emphasized the historical significance of the name in a social media post. The term “hydronym” refers to a body of water and sparked interest online. Swim Drink Fish Canada’s Ford, residing in Dundas, Hamilton, near the lake, admitted to researching the term, noting its appeal in highlighting the importance of names and their meanings.
Lake Ontario, one of the Great Lakes situated between Ontario and New York, derives its name from the Huron-Wendat term “oniatarí:io,” signifying “lake of shining waters.” Established in 1867, the province of Ontario draws its name from the lake’s historical roots.
The T-shirt campaign by Branded By Collins, initially featuring hats and now expanded to include various clothing items, aims to raise funds for Swim Drink Fish Canada. The initiative has garnered support amidst trade tensions, uniting Canadians in appreciating their water heritage and advocating for environmental stewardship. Ford emphasized the pressing need to address threats facing Lake Ontario, such as climate change and pollution, underscoring the campaign’s role in inspiring positive action.
The collaboration between Branded By Collins and Swim Drink Fish Canada reflects a growing interest in preserving Lake Ontario’s ecological integrity and celebrating its cultural significance, transcending political disputes to foster a sense of national pride and environmental responsibility.
