Chinese e-commerce giant JD.com has introduced its fresh Joybuy platform in the United Kingdom in a bid to compete with key rivals like Amazon. The company, valued at £30 billion, offers a wide range of products including technology, appliances, beauty items, groceries, and household essentials from renowned brands such as Apple, LEGO, Samsung, and L’Oréal.
Joybuy is set to provide next-day delivery for orders exceeding £29 in London and several other cities like Birmingham, Leicester, Nottingham, Oxford, and Cambridge, serving a total of 17 million residents. Additionally, the platform features a same-day “Double 11” delivery service for orders placed by 11 am, ensuring delivery by 11 pm. JD.com has established its own logistics operations and will operate distribution facilities from Milton Keynes and Luton.
The expansion into the UK market follows JD.com’s decision to withdraw from negotiations to acquire major British retail brands in recent years. The company had explored potential deals to purchase Currys in 2024 and engaged in talks for a possible takeover of Argos from Sainsbury’s last September. Executives express confidence in establishing a long-term presence in the UK, believing that their product assortment, competitive pricing, and convenience will attract a new customer base.
Matthew Nobbs, managing director of Joybuy UK, emphasized the company’s commitment to long-term growth in the UK market. He highlighted the extensive effort put into refining the platform’s web and app interface during beta testing to enhance the overall customer experience.
In addition to the UK launch, JD.com is also expanding its operations to Germany, the Netherlands, France, Belgium, and Luxembourg. The company sealed a 2.2 billion euro (£1.9 billion) deal to acquire Germany-based electronics retail group Ceconomy last year.
