Keir Starmer is set to host a media briefing today following his leadership of an urgent COBRA meeting concerning the escalating conflict in the Middle East.
Scheduled for 10 am, the Prime Minister will update on the government’s efforts to assist households dealing with increased living expenses amidst the ongoing US-Israel conflict with Iran. The prolonged conflict, now in its fifth week, has significantly inflated global energy prices and raised concerns about potential fuel shortages.
The Iranian blockade of the critical shipping passage, the Strait of Hormuz, may also affect food supplies due to disruptions in fertilizer shipments from Gulf nations. However, authorities have recently assured the public that there are no immediate worries regarding petrol availability, advising citizens to continue refilling their tanks as usual.
Following a COBRA meeting on the swiftly changing regional scenario, Mr. Starmer met with his key ministers at Whitehall on Tuesday evening. Shortly before this, the unpredictable US President, Donald Trump, distanced himself from the conflict, urging the UK and other allies to secure their own oil supply.
In a heated outburst, Mr. Trump asserted that he had tackled the challenging part by initiating military actions against Iran, asserting that it was now the responsibility of allies to address the aftermath by reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
Overnight, Downing Street confirmed that the Prime Minister remains engaged with allies to advocate for de-escalation in the Middle East conflict, emphasizing that this approach is crucial for alleviating domestic price pressures.
During his address, the Prime Minister is expected to highlight the cost of living initiatives unveiled in November’s Budget, which are taking effect today. These measures include wage increases for millions of minimum wage workers, a reduction of the energy price cap by an average of £117 until June, and a freeze on prescription charges.
In a statement on Tuesday evening, Mr. Starmer affirmed, “In a world filled with uncertainty and volatility, it is our government’s duty to safeguard the British populace both at home and abroad. I understand the public’s apprehensions regarding the Iran conflict and its implications for them and their families.”
He reassured the public that the government is actively working with allies on de-escalation efforts and cost-cutting measures. Today, millions across the country will witness energy bill reductions, wage hikes for the lowest earners, and enhanced support for those most in need, all due to the decisions made by this administration.
However, Mr. Starmer stressed the need for further cost-cutting measures, emphasizing the importance of de-escalation in the Middle East and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz as crucial steps to reduce living expenses for families.
