Late-night television hosts, including Jon Stewart, Seth Meyers, Jimmy Kimmel, and even the typically apolitical Jimmy Fallon, have gained fame by satirizing the U.S. president. When Donald Trump barred news outlets CNN, MS NOW, and Politico from the White House last Friday, these hosts passionately defended the First Amendment, which safeguards freedom of speech and the press.
Expressing their outrage, the hosts used their comedic flair to address the situation. Jimmy Kimmel humorously quipped, “The White House press pool is more chaotic than the reflecting pool right now.” He criticized Trump’s actions as “positively un-American” during his show, “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”.
Furthermore, Kimmel highlighted how even Fox News united with other networks in a joint statement emphasizing the public’s need for accurate and independent governmental information. Both Kimmel and Seth Meyers seized upon Trump’s media ban backfiring as the White House press pool refused to cover his launch of a new helipad.
As the White House released a statement restating that White House access is a privilege, not a right, some journalists confronted Trump directly on this issue. Meyers compared Trump’s response to that of an irate Hollywood starlet, while Fallon humorously compared him to a TV show host, suggesting Melania might want to join the banned outlets as a reporter to escape her husband.
Jon Stewart, on “The Daily Show,” criticized Trump’s justification for the media ban, questioning why the president couldn’t provide more positive news stories. Stewart humorously suggested, “Have you tried presidenting better? I mean, give the press something positive to report on.”
The late-night hosts’ reactions ranged from outrage to incredulity as they scrutinized Trump’s actions, with Stewart questioning if there had ever been a president openly defying the Constitution from the Oval Office.
