London’s newest fashion event has kicked off with high praise from a renowned designer, who commended it for elevating African fashion to new heights. The showcase featured innovative African-inspired clothing by emerging designers, accompanied by an Afrobeat music-filled runway show. Veekee James, a luxury designer and Forbes Under 30 honoree, graced the event at The InterContinental London, Greenwich over the weekend.
Expressing her delight at the growing recognition of African fashion globally, Veekee emphasized the efforts being made to showcase African creativity on an international scale. The event, organized by RAFT X, featured a variety of activities, including a runway presentation, a talent competition with a cash prize, and networking opportunities with businesses like Puff Puff Ministry, a British-Nigerian food company.
RAFT X, a newly established annual celebration of arts, culture, and community, received accolades from talent show judge DJ Abass, who highlighted the importance of providing platforms for showcasing African talent. The winner of the talent competition, spoken-word artist Jessica Edgar, known as Poetess Jess, expressed her gratitude for the recognition and opportunity to connect with other talented individuals.
Radio presenter Lady T, one of the judges, praised the multicultural event for promoting African culture and creativity on a global scale. Harvesters UK, the organizer of RAFT X, aims to create impactful experiences through community events, as stated by Pastor Dayo Ogunrombi. Looking ahead, Ogunrombi envisions expanding RAFT X to a larger venue next year and attracting additional brands and sponsors to support the event.
