The iconic queen of pop, Madonna, is set to reclaim her throne at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards. Surpassing Taylor Swift, Madonna has secured the most nominations for the third time in her career, with a total of 11 nods for the upcoming ceremony in recognition of her chart-topping album “Confessions II” and its accompanying film.
Taylor Swift, holding the record as the most awarded solo artist in VMA history, follows closely behind with nine nominations for her album “The Life of a Showgirl” and the music video for “The Fate of Ophelia.” Artists Sabrina Carpenter and Ariana Grande also received significant recognition with seven nominations each.
Having previously led the VMAs nominations in 1990 and 1998 with her eras of “Vogue” and “Ray of Light,” Madonna has been a prominent figure at the awards. She notably made history at the inaugural 1984 ceremony with a groundbreaking performance of “Like a Virgin” that pushed the boundaries of cable television.
In addition to her nominations for video of the year and artist of the year, Madonna is recognized for her song and collaboration “Bring Your Love” featuring fellow nominee Carpenter. Competing for the coveted video of the year award are Madonna’s “Confessions,” Swift’s “Ophelia,” Grande’s “Hate That I Made You Love Me,” Carpenter’s “Tears,” Bruno Mars’s “I Just Might,” and Gener8ion and Yung Lean’s “Storm.”
The public can participate in voting for 13 categories this year, with winners set to be revealed during the live broadcast of the ceremony on September 27, airing on CBS, MTV, and streaming on Paramount+.
