Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao are set to make history with a rematch at The Las Vegas Sphere in what will be the first professional boxing event held at this renowned venue. The highly anticipated fight is scheduled for September.
Having previously faced off in a legendary bout dubbed the ‘Fight of the Century’ in 2015, Mayweather and Pacquiao, two iconic figures in the boxing world, are gearing up for a rematch after both initially retiring from the sport.
Netflix has officially announced that Mayweather Pacquiao II will take place on September 19 at The Las Vegas Sphere, marking another major acquisition for the streaming giant following its successful coverage of Anthony Joshua’s fight with Jake Paul last December.
The upcoming rematch between Mayweather and Pacquiao is expected to break records as the most lucrative in boxing history. Their previous encounter at the MGM Grand Garden Arena saw a staggering £4.6 million in pay-per-view purchases and a record gate of $72.2 million (£53.5 million).
Mayweather reportedly earned $250 million (£185.3 million) from their initial fight, while Pacquiao took home $150 million (£111.2 million). Mayweather, with an undefeated 50-0 record, will put his legacy on the line in the rematch, which is sanctioned as a professional contest.
In response to the fight announcement, Pacquiao expressed his eagerness for the rematch, stating that fans deserve this long-awaited event, especially now that it will be globally streamed live on Netflix. He aims to secure a victory and leave Mayweather with a blemish on his otherwise flawless record.
Mayweather, confident in his abilities, assured that the outcome of the rematch will mirror their first encounter. Both fighters are expected to engage in preparatory matches before facing each other, with Pacquiao scheduled to meet Ruslan Provodnikov and Mayweather likely to fight Mike Tyson in the lead-up to their showdown.
This historic event will mark the first boxing spectacle at The Sphere and only the second sports event overall, following UFC 306 held at the venue in September 2024.
