“Midnight Skiing in Arctic Sweden: Riksgränsen’s Unique Summer Slopes”

Date:

If you thought your opportunity for European skiing had passed, think again. A unique resort in Arctic Sweden, Riksgränsen, boasts slopes open not just into May but even through the high summer days of June. Situated as the world’s most northerly ski resort, it stands 94 miles beyond the renowned ICEHOTEL, which has already melted away by this time of year.

By June 21, Riksgränsen’s snow farmers have toiled diligently to ensure sufficient coverage on the 909m tall mountain for the Midsummer downhill jamboree. Skiers can enjoy a rare experience with three hours of skiing from 10 pm to 1 am under the bright sun and blue skies that persist throughout the night at this latitude of 68.4266°N.

Unlike the relatively milder Alpine ski season, Sweden’s resorts offer a frigid experience, with temperatures dropping to -20°C. After braving the jump-filled slopes of Riksgränsen, skiers often seek refuge in one of two food huts for a warming meal.

Riksgränsen stands out for its unique vibe, attracting a youthful crowd keen on off-piste skiing adventures. The resort also offers heli-skiing, snowmobile tours, and even caving expeditions to the nearby Kåppasjåkkagrottan, Sweden’s largest cave.

The name “Riksgränsen” translates to national border, reflecting its location extending into Norway. Skiers can traverse the “Gränsleden” (border run), crossing into a different country at every turn. Access to Riksgränsen’s slopes requires an Arctic ski pass starting at £140, granting access to neighboring resorts as well.

Nearby resorts like Björkliden cater to families with gentle slopes suited for beginners, while Narvik offers more intense skiing experiences. Narvik is currently undergoing significant upgrades in preparation for the FIS Alpine World Ski Championship in 2029.

The Arctic ski pass provides access to multiple resorts and costs starting from £140, while accommodations at Björkliden’s Hotell Fjället start from £166 per night. Flights to Kiruna, a short train ride away from these resorts, are available from £96 in June.
