In the winter of 2022, Montreal, Canada, played host to over 180 UN member countries who gathered to discuss a crucial new agreement aimed at safeguarding nature. The global biodiversity was facing an unprecedented crisis, with more than one million species at risk of extinction, prompting leaders to realize the imminent threat of ecosystem collapse.
Former environment minister Steven Guilbeault played a pivotal role in facilitating a consensus and setting a new target of protecting 30% of the world’s land and oceans by 2030 to prevent mass extinction. These protected areas were intended for long-term conservation, with strict regulations on activities like fishing and mining.
The agreement also included a commitment to provide financial assistance to lower-income countries for the establishment and management of these protected areas. Guilbeault emphasized the need for compromise among stakeholders during the Montreal negotiations.
However, the main obstacle now hindering the achievement of the Montreal agreement’s goals is insufficient funding. A recent assessment report revealed that based on current commitments, only 27% of lands and 12% of oceans are projected to be protected by 2030.
While there is optimism about meeting terrestrial targets, Guilbeault acknowledged the need for significant progress in ocean protection. The report highlighted the crucial role of increasing funding to accelerate nature protection efforts, with the Montreal agreement calling for $30 billion annually in international financing for biodiversity conservation in developing nations.
Despite progress in some areas, including the ratification of the High Seas Treaty by numerous countries, including Canada, challenges remain. The focus now shifts to mobilizing more financial support to fulfill the ambitious conservation targets set in Montreal.
