The Professional Women’s Hockey League disclosed to The Associated Press that the trophy belonging to the Montreal Victoire team, the Walter Cup, has gone missing. The league stated that the trophy did not reach its intended destination as scheduled and is currently coordinating with the shipping company to locate it.
The trophy, set to be delivered to Lethbridge, Alberta, for a day with Victoire forward Dara Greig, was not found inside the container upon arrival. This led to Greig having to postpone her planned event with the trophy, which included a public appearance at VisitLethbridge.com Arena.
Unlike the NHL’s Stanley Cup, the PWHL does not have a designated person to accompany the trophy when it travels to be with the players. The missing Walter Cup is not the one awarded on the ice but rather a version given to the championship-winning teams to keep. This sterling silver trophy, crafted by Tiffany & Co., weighs approximately 35 pounds and stands at 24 inches in height and 13 inches wide. Engraved on the cup are six W’s symbolizing the league’s original franchises, while the base features the names of the championship teams.
Montreal secured the cup by defeating Ottawa in Game 4 of a best-of-five series in May, becoming the first Canadian team to win the PWHL title. The trophy is named after the league’s founder and primary sponsor, Los Angeles Dodgers owner Mark Walter, and his wife Kimbra.
