A commander in the Royal Navy has stepped down from leading a nuclear-armed submarine in the UK following an investigation into his connection with a Member of Parliament from the Labour Party.
The Royal Navy initiated an inquiry last year to examine whether the officer, who is married, had engaged in an inappropriate relationship with Joani Reid.
Afterward, the Ministry of Defence (MOD) conducted additional security checks when Joani Reid’s spouse, David Taylor, was apprehended on suspicion of aiding China’s foreign intelligence service, as reported by the Financial Times.
The MOD concluded its investigation, confirming no security breaches and no need for disciplinary action against the naval officer. Although the officer has withdrawn from his submarine duties, he remains within the Royal Navy. While there were no violations, it was alleged that the officer and Ms. Reid exchanged “flirtatious” messages, which a source close to Ms. Reid refuted.
The pair reportedly first met when they were younger, and their interactions included a visit by Ms. Reid to the Falsane base in January 2025 through the armed forces parliamentary scheme.
It is understood that there was minimal physical interaction between the two individuals, with only one meeting and message exchanges taking place.
In response to queries, a Royal Navy spokesperson emphasized the utmost priority placed on safeguarding the nuclear deterrent and the stringent security measures in place to protect personnel and resources, declining to address specific cases.
David Taylor, who was detained for allegedly assisting China’s foreign intelligence service, has denied any wrongdoing and has been released on bail. Meanwhile, Joani Reid has voluntarily suspended her Labour whip until internal investigations are completed.
Requests for comments from Joani Reid went unanswered. In a recent statement, she expressed confidence in her husband’s compliance with the law, emphasizing her and her children’s detachment from the ongoing investigation and urging media outlets to respect their privacy.
Moreover, she clarified that she has never visited China, spoken on Chinese matters in Parliament, or raised questions related to China.
