“Nelson Residents Protest Grizzly Bear Euthanization”

Date:

The B.C. Conservation Officer Service announced on August 14 that they euthanized the mother grizzly bear due to safety concerns stemming from its acclimated behavior and lack of fear towards humans. The two remaining yearlings were relocated to an undisclosed area for continued monitoring.

A demonstration was held in Nelson, B.C., to oppose the decision to put down a young grizzly bear that was part of one of two local grizzly families frequently seen in and around Nelson.

Katie Graves, the founder of Ursa Project Society, described the emotional gathering at the rally, emphasizing that the yearling bear with a leg deformity or injury should not have been killed. She highlighted the bear’s mobility, ability to keep up with its family, and sustain itself.

Despite public outcry, the B.C. Conservation Officer Service defended their action by citing the bear’s age, injury, and prior conflicts as factors that made rehabilitation or relocation unfeasible.

Graves mentioned that the mother bear, previously relocated in 2023, returned to the area with her cubs. The fate of the other grizzlies, a sow and two yearlings, remains uncertain, with the Conservation Service assessing each bear individually.

Community responses on social media platforms reflected criticism towards the decision to euthanize the grizzly bear, with many emphasizing the importance of better waste management to prevent such conflicts.

Wildlife biologist Clayton Lamb stressed the need for stricter policies to minimize attractants that draw bears into urban areas, advocating for proactive measures to mitigate human-bear conflicts before they escalate.

The City of Nelson pledged to enhance bear management strategies by implementing bear-resistant garbage cans, educational initiatives, and enforcing regulations on waste and attractant management to promote coexistence with wildlife.
