A significant energy update involving Newfoundland and Labrador and Quebec is set for Monday afternoon in St. John’s. Although not explicitly confirmed, sources suggest that a new agreement on Churchill Falls electricity is on the horizon. Premier Tony Wakeham will be accompanied by Prime Minister Mark Carney, Quebec Premier Christine Fréchette, Quebec’s Energy Minister Bernard Drainville, and Hydro-Québec’s president Claudine Bouchard at the announcement.
Confirming the agreement, Radio-Canada revealed that Fréchette will be signing a deal. Hydro-Québec has scheduled a closed-door briefing with reporters led by Dave Rhéaume, the company’s executive vice-president. Additionally, Natural Resources Canada will hold a technical briefing in Ottawa on the same day.
The announcement, themed around “energy security and economic development,” is slated for 1:45 p.m. NT in St. John’s. Specific details remain limited, but insider sources indicate a new contract regarding Churchill River power with a transmission capacity of 985 megawatts through Quebec. This would enable Newfoundland and Labrador to market up to that capacity to other regions.
Sources also mention a substantial increase in electricity allocation for each province compared to the previous agreement. Quebec is expected to receive nearly 40% more electricity, while Newfoundland and Labrador could see between 25% and 60% additional supply. This growth would stem from enhanced hydroelectric operations at Gull Island and increased generation capacity at the current Churchill Falls facility.
CBC News will provide live coverage of the announcement across various platforms.
