NHL prospect Matthew Mayich, originally from Hamilton and a former player for the Ottawa 67’s in junior hockey, is currently hospitalized in Arizona due to an incident during off-ice training, according to the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). Mayich, 21, who was drafted by the St. Louis Blues in the sixth round of the 2023 NHL draft, is receiving thoughts, prayers, and support from the OHL.
Records show that Mayich played minor hockey with the Hamilton Huskies from 2016 to 2020 before joining the Ottawa 67’s. The incident leading to his hospitalization reportedly occurred while he was preparing for the 2026-27 season in Arizona on August 20.
The St. Louis Blues have expressed their concern for Mayich’s recovery, with Doug Armstrong, the team’s president of hockey operations, stating that the entire organization is keeping Mayich in their thoughts, hoping for his comfort and swift recovery during his medical treatment in Arizona. The Blues extend their deepest support to Mayich’s family, friends, and teammates during this challenging time.
OHL Commissioner Bryan Crawford also offered his support, mentioning that the league’s thoughts are with Matthew, his parents John and Christina, and the entire Mayich family. The Hamilton Steel Hockey Club, formerly known as the Huskies, shared messages of congratulations to Mayich in 2021 when he signed with the ’67s and in 2023 when he was selected by the Blues. The Huskies noted his long-standing involvement with the organization since the age of nine.
