A police officer was brutally stabbed while intervening in an attack on his colleague during a routine traffic stop in Whalley Range on July 26, 2023. Greater Manchester Police Sergeant Tim Ansell courageously stepped in to protect his fellow officer, Sergeant Foster, from a hooded assailant identified as Jacob Brown, 27. The shocking incident was captured on camera as the knifeman launched a surprise attack from behind, targeting the officers.
In the aftermath, bodycam footage revealed Sergeant Ansell pleading for assistance after sustaining multiple stab wounds. Despite his injuries, he shielded Sgt Frost from further harm, displaying remarkable bravery. Ansell suffered severe wounds to his neck, arm, and body during the altercation.
In a swift response, PC Marcus Wolstencroft utilized a Taser to subdue the attacker, allowing for Brown’s arrest and subsequent custody. The heroism displayed by all three officers during the harrowing event was later recognized with prestigious awards for bravery from various institutions.
Sergeant Ansell’s exceptional courage was further acknowledged with the King’s Commendation for Bravery, presented at St. James’ Palace in London. Greater Manchester Police commended the officers for their quick actions, ensuring the safety of each other and preventing harm to the public.
Jacob Brown, armed with a craft knife and unrelated to the initial incident, was sentenced in April 2024 to an indefinite hospital order after admitting to attempted murder and multiple counts of wounding with intent. This outcome marked the conclusion of a tragic event that highlighted the risks faced by law enforcement officers in the line of duty.
