“Online Suicide Promotion: Families Demand Action”

Date:

Aimee, who passed away at the age of 21, was cut off from her family and mental health resources due to a harmful pro-suicide website and its members who promoted and facilitated her decision to end her life.

Despite growing public demand for stricter online safety regulations, websites that endorse and aid suicide on a large scale have managed to evade responsibility, escaping scrutiny from both the government and Ofcom.

Families like mine, who have suffered loss, have been overlooked and dismissed, with 65 coroners’ warnings to the government being disregarded, resulting in the loss of 133 lives in the UK.

Instead of a complete ban on social media for those under 16, I propose that targeting addictive design would offer a more effective long-term solution.

Implementing a ban on addictive design could eliminate various online risks such as self-harm material, grooming, eating disorder content, and broader social media addiction issues affecting individuals of all age groups presently.

I am concerned that a broad social media ban for individuals under 16 could expose young people to harmful content once they gain access.

What young individuals truly need is for the government to hold tech giants accountable – prohibiting the addictive business models that lead teenagers into consuming harmful content would enhance social media safety.

A ban would only penalize children for the failure to regulate social media platforms adequately over the past two decades.

Every reader has the right to influence our digital realm. Thus far, a few billionaires have controlled the digital landscape, but we must collectively reject the notion that they are the sole authorities on technology. In reality, the users are the real experts.

Engage with friends and peers about social media frustrations to realize that you are not alone, contrary to the isolating nature of social media, as our experiences are interconnected.

Technology must prioritize safety by design.

This is not an unreasonable request – if these standards were applied to any other daily-use product like toasters or cars, safety would be expected, or those companies would face closure. Social media firms should not be exempt from these expectations.
