In a significant update on the search for Madeleine McCann, funding for Operation Grange has been approved by Home Office ministers. The operation, initiated in 2011 after Madeleine went missing in Portugal in 2007, has been allocated £86,000 for the upcoming year, slightly lower than the previous year’s budget of £108,000. Since its inception, the investigation has incurred costs of around £13.3 million.
Madeleine disappeared at the age of three while vacationing with her family in Praia da Luz, Algarve. Operation Grange currently comprises three police officers and one part-time staff member. During the trial of Christian Brueckner, a convicted rapist, Detective Constable Mark Draycott disclosed receiving information from Helge Busching implicating Brueckner in the case.
Brueckner, who was released after serving a prison sentence in Germany for a 2005 rape in Portugal, remains a key suspect in Madeleine’s disappearance. Despite this, he has not been formally charged in connection with the case.
In January, Kate and Gerry McCann shared a heartfelt message expressing their hopes for a breakthrough in the New Year. The McCanns thanked the public and law enforcement for their continuous support and wished for a peaceful and positive year ahead, hoping that 2026 would bring the long-awaited breakthrough in the search for Madeleine.
