“Police Raid in London Seizes 11kg of Illegal Bushmeat”

Date:

Police in southeast London conducted a raid that led to the confiscation of 11kg of illegal bushmeat, which included rats and antelope. A 51-year-old man was taken into custody in connection with the raid, part of a Metropolitan Police investigation into illicitly imported meat that could endanger food safety. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) was present during the operation and defined bushmeat as wild animal meat obtained through hunting, often from species found in tropical regions.

The cane rat, a crop-destroying pest in sub-Saharan Africa where sugarcane and maize are grown, was among the confiscated items. The National Food Crime Unit, represented by David Toms-Sheridan, highlighted their collaboration with the Metropolitan Police and other experts to identify individuals involved in such criminal activities. The ongoing efforts of the NFCU aim to disrupt illegal meat trading and prevent unsafe products from entering the market.

The FSA warned against consuming illegally imported meat, including bushmeat, due to potential health hazards. Consumers were advised to report any concerns about suspicious products to local authorities. The agency emphasized the risks posed by unregulated meat, which bypasses safety checks and may carry diseases and contaminants.

Ongoing investigations were reported, with previous instances of illegal meat sales, including cane rat meat, documented in a 2012 undercover investigation by BBC London at Ridley Road Market. The authorities remain vigilant in safeguarding the public against the threat of illicit meat entering the food chain.
