“Quebec Election Campaign Shaped by Trump Tariffs”

Date:

In the previous federal election, discussions in Quebec shifted from defending the province’s interests to safeguarding Canada against the United States due to Donald Trump’s trade threats and statements aiming to integrate Canada as the 51st state. The Liberals, led by Mark Carney, took advantage of this sentiment on election day, achieving their strongest result in Quebec in years and overshadowing the Bloc Québécois.

As the provincial election commences, there is speculation whether the U.S. president will once again play a significant role. The focus leading up to the election launch revolved around the newly imposed tariffs, compelling party leaders to demonstrate their ability to shield Quebec from the economic repercussions.

Economic stability emerged as a crucial concern for voters, overshadowing debates on identity, secularism, and language. The Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) faced challenges as the incumbent party, with issues such as healthcare, housing, and the cost of living previously topping voter concerns. The latest polls indicate a tightening race, with the Parti Québécois (PQ) leading, followed closely by the Liberals and the CAQ gaining ground.

CAQ Leader Christine Fréchette, benefitting from her position during the tumult, announced measures to support businesses affected by the tariffs. Her opponents are questioning her ability to handle the situation effectively, with the PQ and Liberals proposing alternative strategies to safeguard Quebec’s interests.

Amidst the election campaigns, parties are outlining their pitches to voters. Quèbec Solidaire proposed a “Trump provision” to aid affected individuals and companies, while the Conservatives pledged spending cuts and tax relief. The leader who can reassure the electorate in the face of uncertainty caused by Trump’s tariffs is likely to gain an advantage in the election, according to polling analyst Philippe Fournier.
