A couple, Rick and Jeanie McLean, from the Tahltan Nation, stumbled upon intriguing stones during a routine beach outing at Shakes Creek in northern British Columbia. The rocks featured intricate carvings resembling fish and a shield inside a bear paw.
Rick, a former Tahltan chief, and Jeanie, a former Yukon cabinet minister, were amazed by the historical significance of their find. The area holds deep cultural importance for the Tahltan and Tlingit nations, serving as a historical site for trade and gatherings.
The discovery sparked discussions about cultural heritage and history transcending national boundaries. The couple’s social media posts showcasing the carvings attracted significant attention, including interest from universities and an Alaskan clan leader.
Chief Richard Jackson of the Tahltan Band Council acknowledged the presence of petroglyphs near Telegraph Creek but was surprised by the findings at Shakes Creek. He emphasized the stones’ significance in the peace treaty between the Tahltan and Tlingit nations.
While the stones have garnered attention, Jackson urged people to respect their cultural value and avoid disturbing them. The Taku River Tlingit First Nation in Atlin, B.C., declined to comment immediately, citing the need to consult with elders and knowledge keepers first.
