In an effort to address the rising issue of teenage knife crime, schools in high-risk areas are set to implement measures such as chaperones monitoring students during their daily commutes. Approximately 250 schools in knife crime hotspots will undergo specialized training and support to steer children away from violent activities.
Under the newly launched Safety In and Around Schools Partnership by the Government, £1.2 million will be invested to enhance the safety of students traveling to and from school, particularly in areas with high instances of knife crime. Headteachers will receive training on identifying knife crime risks, and chaperones may be stationed along school routes as part of the initiative. Additionally, mentorship programs for at-risk students will be introduced to combat the issue.
School selection for the program will be based on detailed mapping technology developed by the Home Office, pinpointing precise locations of knife crime hotspots during school commuting hours at a micro-geographic level. The initiative will be overseen by the Youth Endowment Fund (YEF) and will be rolled out in phases, with more intense support planned for the upcoming school year.
A pilot chaperone program conducted in the West Midlands in 2021-22, funded by YEF and the Home Office, involved deploying chaperones along school routes to ensure student safety. Inspired by a successful model in Chicago, the ‘Step Together’ scheme aims to provide a safer environment for students.
Recent statistics from the Home Office indicate an 8% decrease in knife crime since the beginning of the current Parliament, with the lowest number of knife-related incidents in a decade. In line with these efforts, the Government is preparing to launch the “Protecting Lives, Building Hope” plan, aiming to reduce knife crime by half within ten years.
Research from YEF in 2024 revealed that fear of violence affects one-third of teenagers, leading to avoidance of certain places and impacting mental health. The initiative has been praised by individuals like Martin and Tara Cosser, founders of charity Charlie’s Promise, who emphasize the importance of a nationwide approach to combat knife crime effectively.
Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy expressed determination to curb knife crime through sustained and coordinated actions to safeguard future generations. Crime and Policing Minister Sarah Jones highlighted the necessity of preventing violence before it occurs, ensuring the safety of all children on their way to school. Children’s Minister Josh MacAlister commended schools for their efforts in keeping children safe and welcomed the additional support provided through the new partnership.
