A 25-year-old woman, Noelia Castillo Ramos, who jumped from a fifth-floor window following a brutal sexual assault, has been authorized to undergo euthanasia. Ramos, now paralyzed, expressed her desire to end her suffering peacefully after enduring years of pain. The young woman, originally from Barcelona, received approval from the European Court of Human Rights and Spain’s Constitutional Court.
Ramos sustained a severe spinal cord injury when she attempted to end her life by jumping from a fifth-floor window. Despite her parents’ efforts to prevent her irreversible decision, she was granted permission to proceed with euthanasia. Ramos, who suffers from Borderline Personality Disorder, had been under institutional care and relied on the Spanish mental healthcare system before the assault.
In 2022, while residing in a state-supervised center for vulnerable youth, Ramos was gang-raped, leading to severe trauma that exacerbated her mental health struggles. Following the assault, she tried to end her life by jumping, resulting in paralysis from the waist down. Her physical pain, disabilities, and deteriorating mental health, including depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder, further complicated her situation.
Spain’s Constitutional Court dismissed her father’s appeal in February 2026, citing no violation of fundamental rights and allowing the euthanasia to proceed under the Organic Law on the Regulation of Euthanasia of 2021. Ramos’ mother, Yolanda Ramos, though not in agreement with the decision, expressed her support for her daughter.
In a recent interview, Ramos affirmed her unwavering decision to undergo euthanasia, emphasizing her desire to end her suffering and find peace. She acknowledged her family’s opposition to euthanasia but stressed the importance of prioritizing her own well-being over their happiness.
