“Spain’s Picos de Europa: Top Destination for Adventurers”

Date:

The globe is filled with incredible destinations waiting to be explored, and selecting the most breathtaking among them is no small task. Time Out has risen to the challenge by unveiling a compilation of the 51 most exquisite places worldwide. This list encompasses a diverse range of landscapes, from lakes and beaches to National Parks, libraries, vineyards, and historic towns. Topping the list is a majestic mountain range offering exceptional hiking opportunities, conveniently located just a two-hour flight away from the UK.

The Picos de Europa in Spain stands out as a striking and rugged limestone mountain range, towering at a height of 2,650 meters. Situated a little over 12 miles from the coast, these mountains rise sharply, creating deep gorges to explore, as reported by Express.

Among the notable trails is the Cares Trail, highly sought-after for its scenic route through a canyon, meandering past craggy peaks and cascading waterfalls. Spanning a total of 13 miles, this trail is not recommended for beginners, yet its moderate slopes make it accessible for hikers with a reasonable level of endurance. For a more straightforward ascent, visitors can opt for the Fuente Dé cable car, swiftly transporting them up the mountainside to revel in the lush landscape below.

Upon reaching the summit, adventurers can further explore additional hiking paths, including challenging steep climbs that offer breathtaking panoramic views. These mountains are part of the expansive Picos de Europa National Park, which is home to the Lakes of Covadonga. These shimmering blue waters, surrounded by peaks and greenery, evoke the landscapes of Scotland or the Lake District, creating an unexpected Spanish experience.

The national park teems with wildlife, including brown bears, wolves, vultures, and eagles, while encounters with mountain goats and colorful butterflies amidst the limestone backdrop are common. At the base of the mountains lie charming towns like the medieval Potes, characterized by centuries-old stone and half-timbered buildings, cobbled streets, exuding a rustic charm.

Arenas de Cabrales, located on the outskirts of the park, is a favored accommodation spot known for producing Cabrales cheese and boasting a variety of renowned restaurants serving Northern Spanish cuisine. Expect hearty and rustic dishes like bean stews and grilled meats, prepared with locally sourced ingredients from the mountains.

The Picos de Europa are conveniently situated just under two hours away from Santander Airport, with airline services including Ryanair. Flights to Santander operate year-round from Edinburgh and London-Stansted, as well as seasonally from Birmingham and Manchester. With fares starting from just £15 one-way, the journey from the UK takes approximately 2 hours.
