Supermarket Own-Brand Mini Eggs Outshine Cadbury’s for Easter

Date:

Mini Eggs are a personal favorite treat of mine, especially during the Easter season. Their unique aroma, satisfying crunch, and charming pastel colors make them a top choice among Easter sweets. While these branded treats are not always budget-friendly and can be challenging to find during this time, I decided to explore various supermarket own-brand alternatives to see if any could rival the original.

Major supermarkets offer their own versions of mini eggs at more affordable prices than the branded ones. I decided to test out selections from Aldi, Lidl, M&S, and Asda to compare with Cadbury’s Mini Eggs. Each store had similar-sized packs, except for Aldi, which only had larger packets available. Despite this, I was excited to taste them all for the first time.

After sampling the different brands, one bag stood out above the rest, surpassing even the original Cadbury version. I was pleasantly surprised and plan to stock up on this particular brand before Easter arrives.

Starting with the Cadbury Mini Eggs, the familiar taste and delightful aroma upon opening the packet never fail to impress. The crispy texture and luscious chocolate center make them a delightful treat. However, as Easter nears, these popular treats become harder to find in stores. Prices typically hover around £2 for an 80g pack, equivalent to roughly £2.50 per 100g.

Moving on to Asda, their own-brand milk chocolate mini eggs priced at £1.12 for an 80g pack, or £1.40 per 100g, offered a more budget-friendly option. While the taste was decent, they lacked the premium quality and distinctive flavor of the original Cadbury eggs, placing them in the middle of the ranking with a score of 2.5/5.

The Mister Choc eggs, priced at £1.15 for 80g, presented a more affordable choice but fell short in terms of taste and texture compared to the top contenders. They received a score of 1/5 in the taste test.

Aldi and Lidl’s own-brand mini eggs, while not as hard as expected, didn’t quite match the flavor profile of the other brands. The Choceur Mini Eggs from Aldi, priced at £3.39 for 256g, or £1.32 per 100g, offered a mid-tier option with slightly bland chocolate. These may not be the best choice for those seeking a rich and creamy mini egg experience, earning a score of 2/5.

On the other hand, M&S impressed with their speckled egg biscuits and chocolate bars, with the mini eggs standing out as a delightful surprise. Larger than expected, round, and glossy, these eggs boasted a perfect chocolate-to-shell ratio and a filling that melts in your mouth. Priced at £1.79 for a 90g bag, or £1.94 per 100g, they are a more affordable and equally satisfying alternative to Cadbury’s Mini Eggs, earning a perfect five-star rating.

In conclusion, for those seeking a worthy substitute for Cadbury’s Mini Eggs, M&S’s own-brand option proves to be a delicious and cost-effective choice worth trying.
