Syrians demonstrated this week demanding justice for the death of Mohammad Ghamira, who passed away in a hospital following alleged mistreatment by security forces while in custody. This incident occurred despite the government’s pledge to eliminate the prevalent arbitrary detentions and abuse of the previous regime less than two years ago.
Ghamira, a 29-year-old father of two, suffered from hemophilia, a genetic disorder impairing blood clotting. He was held in detention for three days, released on August 9, and immediately hospitalized, passing away a week later.
This case has become a crucial test for Syria’s new government to prove its commitment to accountability post the long-standing Assad regime. Ghamira’s death triggered peaceful protests, shedding light on numerous reported instances of mistreatment at detention centers under the new administration.
Fadel Abdulghany, the Syrian Network for Human Rights’ executive director, highlighted concerns over the lack of a unified, judicially supervised system governing detention practices in Syria’s transitional phase. Ghamira, a former volunteer with the White Helmets, was detained on suspicion of theft by the Latakia Internal Security Command. The Interior Ministry initiated an investigation into Ghamira’s death, detaining seven personnel for questioning. However, concerns remain regarding the scope and transparency of the internal inquiry, with calls for an independent criminal investigation for comprehensive accountability.
