Teacher Saves Choking Student: Heroic Action Praised

Date:

A teacher at Dolby Elementary School in Lake Charles, Louisiana, is being praised for her quick actions that saved a choking six-year-old student during lunchtime. Megan Benham noticed the boy in distress with tears running down his face and sprang into action when she realized he was choking on a piece of apple. Following life-saving techniques learned from her husband, she successfully dislodged the food, allowing the child to breathe again.

The boy’s parents expressed their gratitude, with his mother acknowledging the fear she felt and the relief of having her child safe. His father, an ICU nurse, highlighted the importance of teachers receiving training for such emergencies, emphasizing the critical role they play in the safety of children throughout the day.

The incident left the boy shaken but ultimately unharmed, although he was hesitant to eat for the remainder of the day. He later expressed his gratitude by offering a donut to his teacher and expressing his desire for her to remain as his teacher. His siblings also shared their appreciation for Benham, grateful to still have their brother with them.

The school board superintendent commended Benham for her swift response, stating that her actions potentially prevented a tragedy. The importance of educators’ dedication and quick actions in ensuring the safety of students was emphasized, with gratitude expressed by both the school board and the student’s parents.
