A former teacher revealed that enduring repeated physical and verbal mistreatment during her teaching career prompted her decision to resign, despite it being her lifelong aspiration. Alice Scholz, inspired by her mother from an early age to pursue teaching, dedicated years to the profession.
However, numerous distressing incidents led her to reconsider her career path. The 31-year-old experienced injuries caused by students in the classroom and faced malicious behavior from parents as well. Recounting her ordeal, Alice, residing in Windsor, disclosed instances of physical and verbal abuse she encountered throughout her teaching tenure.
She detailed being physically assaulted by students, including being punched and scratched, with one disturbing incident where a child grabbed her forcefully, causing bruises. Additionally, she recalled confrontations with parents, one incident involving a father berating her for reporting his child’s misbehavior, leading to further intimidation.
Originally motivated by her mother’s dedication to supporting children with Special Educational Needs (SEN), Alice’s decision to leave teaching was met with relief from family and friends. Expressing mixed emotions about leaving a profession she once cherished, she acknowledged a sense of liberation from the job’s constant pressure.
Drawing comparisons between the education systems in Australia and the UK, Alice noted significant differences. She highlighted the better work-life balance, higher pay, and creative freedom she enjoyed while teaching in Australia, in contrast to the UK’s data-driven and demanding system that ultimately led to burnout.
Although she does not foresee a full-time return to teaching, Alice mentioned the possibility of working as a supply teacher, with a firm commitment to establishing boundaries for self-protection. She emphasized the importance of self-care in a system that often lacks adequate support for educators.
Considering alternative career paths, Alice mentioned completing a project management course and exploring corporate opportunities. Reflecting on her teaching experience, she emphasized the need for boundaries, autonomy, and support to prevent burnout and maintain well-being in the demanding profession.
