President Donald Trump provided an update regarding the construction of a large underground military bunker beneath the White House, amidst ongoing controversy over his proposed $300 million ballroom project. The initiative, centered on the desired White House ballroom, has stirred debate following the demolition of the East Wing to create a sizable event space and the concurrent construction of a previously undisclosed underground military facility.
During a press briefing aboard Air Force One, Trump disclosed that the construction of the underground complex had been inadvertently exposed due to a lawsuit related to the ballroom project. He emphasized that the military is constructing a substantial facility beneath the ballroom, incorporating advanced protective measures.
Trump described the ballroom as concealing the construction underneath it, highlighting the inclusion of high-grade bulletproof glass to safeguard the facility from potential threats like drones. Despite legal challenges, a US District Court judge ruled in favor of halting ballroom construction until formal approval from Congress is secured, acknowledging the project’s national security components.
The administration has appealed the ruling, asserting that the construction involves critical protective infrastructure rather than mere aesthetic enhancements. Trump reiterated the necessity of the project for safety and security, citing various security features like drone-proof roofing, secure air-handling systems, bio-defense installations, telecommunications infrastructure, bomb shelters, and medical facilities.
While underground facilities at the White House are not new, the status of any modernized or replacement complex remains unclear. Reports earlier this year suggested the dismantling of the existing bunker as part of ongoing renovations, with limited official information available. When questioned about the construction, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt declined to provide specifics, indicating ongoing military upgrades and classified project details.
The project has faced scrutiny from architectural and preservation groups concerning the demolition of the East Wing and the scale of the ballroom, despite revised approval of the ballroom proposal by planning bodies. Trump’s recent remarks on potential military actions against Iran have sparked calls for his removal from office, with former White House director Anthony Scaramucci demanding immediate action to address the situation.
