“UK Authorizes Seizure of Russian Shadow Fleet Vessels”

Date:

British authorities are prepared to intercept Russian shadow fleet vessels passing through UK waters to prevent the Kremlin from capitalizing on the Iran crisis to support its military activities. Keir Starmer has authorized British military and law enforcement to seize oil tankers attempting to evade sanctions and benefit Vladimir Putin’s finances.

In collaboration with the US, British forces participated in a high-stakes operation on the Marinera tanker near Iceland earlier this year. Following accusations of violating oil sanctions in Venezuela, the vessel, previously named Bella-1, was targeted.

Recently, the UK supported the French navy in impounding an oil tanker in the Mediterranean. Notably, British commandoes now have the green light to board such vessels, marking a significant shift in strategy.

The Prime Minister emphasized the necessity of safeguarding the nation amidst escalating global threats, particularly from Putin’s exploitation of Middle East turmoil to bolster his wealth. By targeting Putin’s shadow fleet, the UK aims not only to ensure national security but also to cut off funding for his aggressive endeavors in Ukraine.

In an upcoming summit in Helsinki, Keir Starmer will meet with Nordic and Baltic allies to discuss strategies for countering Russia’s escalating aggression. The UK is intensifying efforts to combat Moscow’s shadow fleet, suspected to comprise over 1,000 antiquated tankers engaged in illicit oil transportation to support Putin’s military activities.

A significant portion of Russia’s crude oil is transported by these aged vessels, with approximately 544 ships already facing sanctions from the UK and allied nations. Moreover, these deteriorating ships have been implicated in sabotaging undersea cables critical for telecommunications and energy supplies, posing severe risks to vital infrastructure.

To impede the movement of these vessels, British forces are tightening controls in UK waters, compelling ships to take longer, costlier routes or risk interception. Military and law enforcement units are actively engaging in simulated scenarios, including boarding non-compliant vessels, some of which may be armed or equipped with advanced evasion tactics.

Upon detention, legal actions may be initiated against the ship’s owners, operators, and crew. This proactive stance aims to disrupt illicit activities, safeguard national interests, and uphold sovereignty in the face of evolving security threats.
