“UK Bans Cryptocurrency Donations to Political Parties”

Date:

Political parties are set to be prohibited from receiving donations in cryptocurrencies, as declared by Keir Starmer. Additionally, the Government will impose a restriction on donations from UK citizens residing abroad who are still on the electoral register, aligning with the recommendations of former senior civil servant Philip Rycroft.

This decision comes after an examination into foreign involvement in British politics, initiated by ministers following the imprisonment of Nathan Gill, the former leader of Reform UK in Wales, for accepting bribes from Moscow.

During a session of PMQs, the Prime Minister emphasized the serious risks posed by illicit financial activities outlined in the Rycroft review. He announced decisive actions to safeguard democracy, including a temporary halt on all political contributions made through cryptocurrencies. The move is aimed at enhancing transparency and integrity in political funding.

Under the revised regulations unveiled on Wednesday, British expatriates will now face an annual cap of £100,000 on their political donations and related transactions, such as loans of equivalent value. Political parties will be required to return donations exceeding the stipulated cap within 30 days. The changes address concerns that digital currencies could be exploited to conceal the origins of funding. Additionally, there will be a prohibition on foreign-sponsored online political advertisements.

The new rules will be retroactively applied to all cryptocurrency donations received from the current day, confirmed by Communities Secretary Steve Reed. He emphasized the government’s commitment to safeguarding democracy by combatting foreign interference and illicit financial flows. The ban on cryptocurrency donations is viewed as crucial in upholding the integrity of elections and preventing external entities from undermining the UK’s democratic processes.

Philip Rycroft highlighted the persistent threat of foreign interference in UK politics, with espionage activities originating from countries like Russia, China, and Iran. He also raised concerns about potential interference from private individuals, including those from allied nations like the United States.

Dr. Jess Garland, Director of Policy and Research at the Electoral Reform Society, emphasized the importance of restoring public trust in politics. She stressed the need for regulations that ensure politicians prioritize the interests of voters over financial contributors, thereby preventing undue influence from domestic and foreign sources.
