Berlin’s iconic techno clubs have always had a mysterious selection process, but a recent study aimed to demystify this procedure. Conducted by the University of Bath, King’s College London, and Freie Universität Berlin, the research, published in the Journal of Marketing, revealed that door selectors at these clubs seek individuals who both ‘fit in’ and ‘stand out’ to enhance the club experience.
However, local writer and music expert, Dr. Liam Cagney, believes that the study only scratches the surface. Cagney describes Berlin’s club scene as a blend of public and private spaces, making the door selection process more of an art form.
Cagney compares door selectors to hosts inviting guests to a party, emphasizing the unique social dynamics within Berlin’s club scene. He notes that the city’s historical significance adds complexity to the criteria for entry, often confusing club tourists who expect easy access.
The rise of social media platforms like TikTok has led to an influx of ‘techno tourists’ eager to experience Berlin’s renowned clubs. Online forums and videos offer tips on behavior and attire to improve one’s chances of gaining entry into hotspots like Berghain and Tresor.
Cagney observes a shift towards a more consumerist attitude among these social media-driven tourists, impacting the experience for regular club-goers. He stresses the role of bouncers in maintaining the club’s atmosphere and recounts instances where bouncers employed creative tactics for admission, such as rejecting individuals based on attire.
Despite occasional missteps, Cagney believes that the current system, while imperfect, is the most viable option for club entry. He advocates for viewing Berlin’s techno clubs not just as entertainment venues but as personal ‘parties,’ emphasizing the importance of becoming an insider to navigate the scene successfully.
Cagney’s upcoming book, “Berghain Nights,” slated for release in October 2025, will delve into Berlin’s club culture, blending essays and memoirs with interviews of electronic music artists and key figures in the city’s nightlife scene.
