British voters have been cautioned against following Nigel Farage, described as a “charlatan” by a senior US congressman who drew parallels with the American support for Donald Trump. The warning came from Jamie Raskin, a prominent Democrat in the House Judiciary Committee, following a confrontation with Farage during a UK visit last summer and further criticisms during a hearing on “free speech” issues in Washington last September.
In an interview with the Mirror at his Congressional Office in Washington DC, Rep. Raskin urged British voters to be wary of Farage, labeling him an “imposter” devoid of genuine commitment to free speech, but rather focused on promoting right-wing politics.
Expressing concern over a potential resemblance between the UK and Trump’s America, Rep. Raskin emphasized his respect for British cultural icons like Shakespeare, The Clash, The Beatles, and the Rolling Stones, suggesting that a society renowned for producing exceptional literary works and music should not fall for the deceptive tactics of someone like Farage.
Highlighting the importance of upholding British values and heritage, Rep. Raskin emphasized the need for the UK to return to its roots rather than embracing figures like Farage or considering Trump as a role model.
Recalling a contentious encounter with Farage in London last July, Rep. Raskin recounted a heated exchange during a discussion on free speech, where Farage abruptly ended the conversation when challenged on the state of free speech in America. Rep. Raskin criticized Farage’s dismissive attitude towards differing viewpoints, likening his behavior to a petulant child taking away a football when things did not go his way.
Rep. Raskin’s remarks underscored his belief in the UK’s cultural contributions and historical significance, urging against the acceptance of fraudulent personalities like Farage and those who align themselves with the ideologies of Donald Trump.
