A US military plane encountered an emergency en route from Israel to a British airbase. The Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker, which took off from Ben Gurion Airport for RAF Mildenhall in Suffolk, reportedly faced a hydraulic issue during the flight. The crew signaled a general emergency by transmitting a Squawk 7700 code off the Norfolk coast, where the aircraft circled to burn off excess fuel before landing.
Although the crew initially sought to divert to London Heathrow Airport for its longer runway, the KC-135 eventually landed safely at Mildenhall. The KC-135 Stratotanker is crucial for supporting US Air Force missions by providing aerial refueling. With four turbofan engines under its 35-degree swept wings, it can take off at weights up to 322,500 pounds and transport up to 83,000 pounds of cargo based on its fuel setup, as per the US Air Force.
This incident follows the tragic crash of a KC-135 Stratotanker in Iraq on March 12, resulting in the loss of six US service members. The US military clarified that the crash was not due to hostile or friendly fire and is currently under investigation.
In other news, US-Israeli strikes on Iran have caused over 1,500 fatalities, as reported by Iran’s health ministry.
