The Vancouver Rise have received reinforcements as they gear up for an important match against the Halifax Tides. The Northern Super League team recently acquired two defenders to strengthen their squad for the upcoming game. Chantelle Swaby, previously with Leicester City in the Women’s Super League, and Kaela Hansen, who played for NSL side AFC Toronto, have joined the Rise.
Head coach Anja Heiner-Moller expressed excitement about the new additions, highlighting the unique qualities each player brings to the team. Swaby, aged 28, boasts extensive experience from various leagues, including the National Women’s Soccer League and France’s top division. She is known for her composure and leadership on the field, providing a sense of calmness during intense moments in the game.
Hansen, 26, is thrilled to return home to Vancouver and play in front of a local audience. The Burnaby native emphasized the significance of being near her family once again, making the opportunity even more special. The signings come after the retirement of Mariah Lee, who decided to pursue a career in law, leaving a gap in the Rise’s lineup.
Additionally, Vancouver bid farewell to goalkeeper Kirstin Tynan, who was loaned to the Halifax Tides for the remainder of the season. The Rise, currently at a 5-9-1 record, are aiming to secure a playoff spot as they trail behind Halifax by five points in the standings. Forward Jessica De Fillippo acknowledged the importance of the upcoming matches, expressing the team’s determination to return to the playoffs and showcase their competitiveness until the end of the season.
