In a surprising turn of events, Molly, an African spurred tortoise not native to the area, was discovered meandering slowly around Oak Hammock Marsh in Manitoba’s Interlake, far from her Sahara desert origins. Gillian Malchuk, a nature interpreter at the marsh, along with her colleagues, rescued the hefty 36-kilogram tortoise after receiving reports of unusual sightings. Initially skeptical, they were convinced after a sighting was documented on the iNaturalist app.
The staff at Oak Hammock Marsh were taken aback by Molly’s presence, expecting a smaller creature instead. A visitor alerted them to Molly’s presence in the parking lot, leading to a comical search in the reeds until she was spotted behind them. The staff provided her with cucumbers and flower petals, giving her a temporary home until her owners were located.
Molly’s family, who had raised her for 15 years since she was a baby, reclaimed her on July 22 after Malchuk connected with them through social media. It was a heartwarming reunion as Molly’s “mother” joyfully greeted her. The family explained that Molly had likely escaped through a gap in the backyard fence during renovations, showcasing the tortoise’s escape artist abilities.
The mystery remains as to how Molly ended up at the marsh, 20 kilometers away from her home. One theory suggests that a well-intentioned individual may have relocated her, unaware of the unsuitability of the wetland for a tortoise. Despite the speculation, the exact journey Molly undertook to reach the marsh remains a puzzle, leaving everyone amazed at her unexpected adventure.
