University of Waterloo doctoral student Kaveeshan Thurairajah recently received an Ig Nobel Prize, a humorous counterpart to the prestigious Nobel Prizes, for his work on developing a splash-free urinal. Alongside his team, Thurairajah experimented with various urinal prototypes, such as the Nautilus and Cornucopia designs, to reduce splashing and enhance ease of cleaning. Their efforts culminated in the creation of an anatomically precise “pee machine” for testing purposes.
During the awards ceremony in Zurich, Thurairajah and his colleagues donned bright yellow raincoats as they accepted their accolades. Despite the unconventional nature of their research, Thurairajah emphasized the practical implications of their work in improving public restroom facilities.
The Ig Nobel event also recognized Canadian researchers investigating diverse topics, including the tendency of affluent individuals to take candy from children, the use of mosquito proboscises for 3D printing, and other quirky scientific endeavors. The awards, previously held in the United States, have now shifted to Europe to facilitate global participation in the celebration of offbeat scientific achievements.
Thurairajah highlighted the importance of international collaboration in the scientific community, underscoring the value of inclusivity and knowledge exchange among researchers worldwide.
