“Ice-Hardened Freighters Could Extend Churchill Shipping Season”

A recent series of studies indicates that ice-hardened freighters could potentially navigate Hudson Bay outside of the current four-month Port of Churchill shipping season. However, the studies also highlight the ongoing presence of ice in the bay, presenting challenges even under pessimistic global warming scenarios in the coming years.

The research, aimed at assessing the feasibility of extending the Port of Churchill’s shipping season, emphasizes that ice conditions will vary annually, leading to uncertainty regarding ice thickness and the necessary vessel specifications for navigation in Hudson Bay.

Moreover, one of the studies raises concerns about the ability of ice-hardened vessels carrying full loads of liquid natural gas to pass through the mouth of the Churchill River.

These findings will offer the Manitoba government valuable insights as it endeavors to attract investors for a substantial project to enhance the Port of Churchill and upgrade the Hudson Bay Railway. Arctic Gateway Group, in collaboration with shipping company Fednav, conducted the studies to explore the requirements for enabling year-round shipping operations at the Port of Churchill.

The study conducted by Fednav suggests that utilizing ice-hardened freighters could extend the shipping season in Churchill presently and potentially enable year-round access in the future. However, Fednav cautions that achieving year-round shipping is contingent on the dynamic ice conditions in Hudson Bay and the challenges associated with navigating the shallow and narrow approach to the Port of Churchill within the Hudson Bay estuary.

Fednav also highlights the need for further field studies, probe voyages, and simulation-based assessments to mitigate uncertainties and inform decisions on extended-season or year-round shipping activities.

According to estimates by the Arctic Research Foundation, acquiring ice-hardened vessels of varying toughness levels could cost between $100 million and $410 million, considerably less than the multibillion-dollar icebreakers needed for traversing thick multi-year Arctic Ocean ice.

Fednav underlines that significant dredging, infrastructure modifications, or the development of an offshore loading facility would be necessary to accommodate the dimensions and draft requirements of the ice-hardened vessels at Churchill due to existing depth constraints.

Additionally, a separate study by a group of academics, including sea ice expert Feiyue Wang from the University of Manitoba, concludes that ice will persist in Hudson Bay even if the average global temperature rises by five degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels by the end of this century. Current projections by atmospheric scientists anticipate a global temperature increase of 3.4 degrees Celsius within the same timeframe.
