“The Tragically Hip’s Final Show: A Decade Later”

Date:

A decade has passed since The Tragically Hip’s final performance in Kingston, Ontario, yet Paul Langlois admits he is still coming to terms with it. Reflecting on the event, the guitarist expressed his appreciation for the band’s impact on fans.

The emotional farewell concert saw lead singer Gord Downie bid adieu to a packed audience at Kingston’s Rogers K-Rock Centre, evoking tears from both fans and the band members. The iconic Canadian group, which formed in 1984 and released 13 studio albums, concluded their touring career with this poignant show on August 20, 2016. Tragically, Downie’s battle with terminal brain cancer, diagnosed in December 2015, tragically led to his passing a year later at the age of 53.

In honor of the 10th anniversary, CBC will rebroadcast the band’s final concert to commemorate the occasion. The band members, including guitarist Rob Baker, emphasized the significance of the event as a time for remembrance rather than celebration. Langlois shared his initial uneasiness before the show but was uplifted by Downie’s positive outlook during soundcheck.

Throughout the farewell tour, concerns arose about Downie’s health impacting his performances, but the band witnessed his physical improvement as the tour progressed. The band members admitted that they underestimated the profound impact of their final show until after the fact, realizing the widespread emotional resonance it had across the country.

While there are no plans for a reunion, The Tragically Hip recently released a new album titled “Live July 22 – August 20, 2016,” featuring recordings from their 2016 tour. Baker acknowledged the healing power of music, recounting a personal moment that highlighted how music can aid in processing emotions and experiences, even when one is unaware of its therapeutic effect.
