The Israeli government has issued a warning to Hamas, threatening to escalate “targeted strikes” on Gaza if action is not taken to prevent the flying of kites towards Israel by Palestinians, including children.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in a statement shared on a social media platform on Sunday, disclosed that he and Defense Minister Israel Katz conducted a “situational assessment” to address the ongoing threat posed by drones, balloons, and kites launched from Gaza towards Israel. The meeting also included Lt.-Gen. Eyal Zamir, chief of the general staff, the head of the National Security Council, and senior officials of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).
Israel has cautioned Hamas that if the launches do not halt immediately, the IDF will intensify targeted strikes against those responsible for the launches and evacuate populations from areas used as launch sites for kites, drones, and balloons. Netanyahu emphasized that Israel will not tolerate any threats from Hamas or other entities in Gaza that compromise the security of Israeli communities.
Meanwhile, amidst the conflict between Israel and Hamas, where Israeli strikes and tank fire recently resulted in casualties, including two children, a 13-year-old Palestinian boy named Omar Halawa shared his perspective on flying kites in Gaza. He expressed that flying kites by the shore in Khan Younis serves as a source of joy amid the turmoil, emphasizing that they are not engaging in harmful activities and simply seek to live peacefully.
The tensions have escalated following an attack on Israel by Hamas on October 7, 2023, prompting retaliatory measures from Israel. The conflict has claimed numerous lives on both sides, with Hamas accusing Israel of committing brutal acts against Palestinians and violating international law. Hamas has called for condemnation of Israel’s actions and urged for a genuine ceasefire in Gaza.
Omar, expressing fear of potential strikes while flying kites, reflects the concerns of many in the region, including his mother, Yasmin Halawa, who worries about the impact of security measures on children’s activities. Despite the challenges, children in Gaza persist in flying kites, adapting their activities to the changing circumstances.
